Depicting the entry into Paris of the Ottoman ambassador Yirmisekiz Mehmed Çelebi and his retinue in 1721, this nocturnal scene bears witness to the dawn of the Turquerie movement that would sweep across Europe. With its lantern-lit domed ceremonial tent, torch-bearing procession and horses, the composition is regarded as the artist's largest known work and his masterpiece; signed and dated 1827, it is presented in its original gilded black lacquer frame. The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity with reference to E. Bénézit (Vol. 3, p. 679).

Jean-Pierre Drouin (Besançon 1782 – Besançon 1861) was a French painter celebrated for his portrait miniatures and watercolours. Trained at the school of the Académie in Paris under the sculptor Dejoux, he then studied miniature painting with Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin, the foremost miniaturist of the age, establishing himself as a miniature painter at the Palais Royal in Paris from 1816. His work is represented in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Besançon and the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, and he is recorded in E. Bénézit's dictionary of artists.
