The Golden Horn and the historic peninsula are pictured from above as an urban fabric woven of thousands of fine lines in tones of copper; at the centre stand the dome and minaret of the New Mosque, with silhouettes of boats on a pink-lilac surface of water. The sky is covered in a mosaic-like weave of broken deep-blue lines and orange glints upon a turquoise ground.

About the Artist

Devrim Erbil (b. 1937, Uşak) is one of the pioneering figures of contemporary Turkish painting. He graduated from the Painting Department of the İstanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in 1959, having trained under Halil Dikmen and Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, and went on to serve at the Academy for many years as both teacher and administrator. His urban panoramas, which interpret Istanbul through a rhythmic, linear abstraction, remain the most celebrated theme of his art. Named a State Artist in 1991, Erbil is represented in Turkey's foremost museum collections.
