Cellist in a Café

Medium
Oil on canvas
Dimensions
50 × 70 cm
Viewing

A café interior with walls covered in old posters and a black-and-white chequered floor: at the left, beside a gramophone, a clown in a turquoise jacket plays the cello, while on the red leather banquettes a woman in a polka-dot dress eats an ice cream and a man is absorbed in his newspaper. A stained-glass lamp, suitcases and bottles complete a scene whose naïve idiom, worked with a love of detail, conjures a warm atmosphere of nostalgia. The artist's signature appears at the lower right.

About the Artist

Züleyha İnan is a painter who lives and works in Ankara, where she founded Galeri Demirel; she shares a studio with the painter Aslı Sayan and her daughter, the painter Beliz Samlı. Among the artists of Lacivert Art Gallery in Istanbul, İnan has taken part in the ArtAnkara International Contemporary Art Fair. Her practice in oils ranges from views of Istanbul to figurative interiors; in the work in our collection she depicts a café interior in a naïve idiom worked with a love of detail.
