A view of Istanbul opening out from the hillsides: rough stone walls and leafless trees in the foreground, and just behind them the tile-roofed houses of an old neighbourhood, rendered in yellow and bluish render, with their bay windows, chimneys, satellite dishes and washing lines. Concrete apartment blocks and roof terraces line the middle ground; on the horizon, behind a pale veil of haze, the Galata Tower rises with its conical cap. A light turquoise sky encloses the scene. Built on a measured balance of broken grey, tile red and faded yellow, the view gathers the old and new fabric of the city into a single frame. The artist's signature appears at the lower right.

About the Artist

The canvas by Kadir Ablak in our collection is given over to a panorama of Istanbul seen from the hillsides: rough stone walls and leafless trees in front, tile-roofed houses of an old neighbourhood in the middle, the fabric of apartment blocks behind and, on the horizon, the Galata Tower. The painter breaks the local colours down into grey and pale blue and builds detail as patches rather than describing it piece by piece; a thin veil of haze over the city opens the depth layer by layer and gives the view the quiet weight of winter.
