A fable-like shore in a long, narrow panorama: an island rising with its ramparts, towers and red flag upon a green summit, round-crowned trees and a tree in violet blossom along its slopes. Small figures appear in the coloured boats drawn up side by side along the shore; a toy horse rides in the foremost boat. The sea turns to ornament in curl upon curl of stylised wave, and the same curls frame the composition as motifs of cloud; the sky moves through tones of apricot and peach. The artist's signature and the date appear at the lower right.
About the Artist
Hale Nurol's work has appeared for years in Turkish auction catalogues; almost all recorded works are signed oils on canvas, among them long, narrow formats. In the work in our collection that elongated format carries a fable-like coastal scene: an island crowned by a fortress, boats drawn up along the shore and waves curling into ornament, painted with a naive and meticulous hand.
